What is a cold email?

Cold emails are a great way to connect with someone and learn more about their company. They are usually sent from a person who knows the person they want to reach but doesn’t know how to contact them directly. Cold emails are often used to ask for introductions to others at a company or organization.

A cold email should always begin with a greeting. This could be something simple like “Hi! I saw your profile on LinkedIn and wanted to introduce myself.” Or it could be something more personal like “I am writing this email because we share a mutual connection.” Either way, the first line should be friendly and professional.

The second section of a cold email should contain a brief introduction of yourself. Include any relevant background information about yourself and what you do. If you are looking for a job, mention your skills and experience. If you are trying to network, talk about your connections and why you think the person would benefit from meeting you.

Next, write a summary of the person you are contacting. This is where you tell them why you reached out to them. Explain why you think they might be able to help you. Don’t assume anything — you may not even know the answer to this question.

Finally, end the email by asking for the right action. Ask for an introduction to someone else at the company or organization. Ask for a referral. Ask for a phone call or coffee date. Whatever you ask for, make sure it is specific and measurable. For example, instead of saying “Can you give me a referral?” say **Please refer me to someone who can help me.**
